The housing problem in Iraq is worsening rapidly, in a country with a growth rate of 3% per year, and is largely concentrated in the capital, Baghdad, in the absence of official figures, or a population census that accurately shows the extent of the problem and the actual need of citizens.

On the other hand, real estate is experiencing a steep price hike in the capital, Baghdad, in a suspicious way linked by some to money-laundering operations, leaving the middle-income class unable to find decent housing. The investment housing projects established in Baghdad have not solved the problem, owing to their high prices and premium payment plan, in the absence of the Government to invest in this sector, except for the Bismayah complex, it provides a proper payment system, but at the same time it is very far from the center of the capital, and so far, the problems with completing the highway that is supposed to connect it to the city center have not been eliminated.

And look at the (map of the completion rates of the housing complex projects) published on the website of the Ministry of Reconstruction, Housing, Municipalities, and Public Works, and out of 49 projects implemented by the Ministry, none included Baghdad!

The escalating housing crisis has been accompanied by an economic crisis that has not recovered since 2014, following ISIS’s occupation of the vast geography of Iraq, in a way that the government has been unable to introduce a real housing initiative that contributes to reducing this crisis, given the need for 7 million housing units as estimated by some experts, with a complete absence of official figures.
