Al-Bayan Center for Studies and Planning held a dialogue session to mark the publication of the book “Women and Power in Iraq After 2003: Paths to Political Empowerment and Social Transformations,” by author Hayam Ali Al-Murhej, in the presence of the Prime Minister’s Advisor on Women’s Affairs, Ala Talabani, and Baghdad Provincial Council member Ayat Muzaffar.
The session discussed the reality of women in Iraq after the year 2003, the paths of their presence in decision-making positions, as well as the social and political challenges that continue to affect their participation in public life.
The session addressed several key themes, including women, power, and political representation; the role of women in provincial councils; and women’s participation in the labor market and government institutions, alongside the realities of minority women and the diversity of their experiences based on their different social, religious, and ethnic affiliations.
For her part, the author presented the study’s main findings, particularly the results of the fieldwork, emphasizing the importance of moving beyond simply discussing women’s empowerment as a slogan to examining the political, social, and institutional factors that determine their ability to access positions of influence and exercise power.
This activity comes as part of Al-Bayan Center’s dedication to providing dialogue platforms that bring together academic theorizing and decision-makers, in order to formulate public policies that promote the social and political empowerment of Iraqi women.
