Al-Bayan Center for Studies and Planning hosted a specialized training workshop entitled “Combating Crimes of Torture and Other Forms of Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment.” The workshop was held in cooperation with the High Commission for Human Rights and targeted employees of the Ministry of Justice – Iraqi Correctional Directorate, with the aim of enhancing their competencies in the field of human rights.
The program included a comprehensive review of the legal and human rights concepts related to the prevention of violations. The workshop addressed crimes of torture within the context of the international convention and their harmonization with national laws, highlighting precise legal definitions, the constituent elements of the crime, and the classification of victims.
The workshop also provided an in-depth explanation of forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment prohibited by international standards and domestic legislation. On the practical side, applied exercises were conducted through working groups that focused on simulating real-life cases and applying prevention and oversight mechanisms within correctional institutions.
On another level, the workshop recorded active participation from attendees representing various correctional departments and administrative units affiliated with the Ministry of Justice. The list of trainees included staff members from several prisons, including the women’s prison, in addition to specialists from public health and social research departments.
This cooperation comes as part of efforts to entrench humanitarian standards in the treatment of detainees, in a manner consistent with legal and international orientations.
